Mini Monograph of the Month, turmeric

It’s a thing!
This is Curcuma Longa, better known as turmeric. From the Zingiberaceae family. The part of the plant used is the rhizome. It has a long history as a therapeutic in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine to aid with digestion and liver protection, considered cornerstones of good health. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory which may be why it is considered to slow the ageing process and seen as a rejuvenator. It has been investigated for possible anti-cancer benefits and as a support with Alzheimer disease. Other known actions are alterative, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-platelet, vulnerary and lowering cholesterol levels. Complement with black pepper to gain efficacy. Add to diet fresh or dry (great for intestinal flora). Specific preparations can be prescribed for gastritis or skin infections, eczema and psoriasis. It is also useful as an addition to arthritis treatment.

For a soothing drink that will nurture but keep you light reach for a warm milk. Here are options that will support you with comforting flavours.

Cardamon-nutmeg: Add 2 pinches of ground cardamon and ground nutmeg each to a cup of boiled milk, either cow’s milk or almond.

Golden milk: Add 2 pinches of turmeric powder, a pinch of cinnamon, a very small pinch of salt to a cup of boiled milk.

The scents themselves are invigorating. The spices deeply nourishing. And the hygge has not gone out of fashion yet!
